Río Higuerón (Frigiliana)
Trail description
The Río Higuerón, also known as the "Chillar de Frigiliana", is a spectacular and far less crowded alternative to the famous Río Chillar route. The trail winds through the canyon that the river has carved over millennia into the limestone rock, creating a landscape of extraordinary beauty.
The route starts on the outskirts of Frigiliana, Málaga's prettiest village, and follows the river upstream. As you press on, the canyon walls close in progressively, forming passages where sunlight barely reaches the ground.
Along the way you'll come across numerous crystal-clear pools, perfect for cooling off. The terrain alternates between dry sections of the riverbed and stretches where you wade through the water, making this a wonderfully refreshing experience during the warmer months.
Riparian vegetation lines the entire route: oleanders, fig trees and reeds blend with bare rock to create a landscape of striking contrasts. Spanish ibex are a common sight on the canyon walls.
