Frigiliana — The Prettiest Village in Andalusia
Just 15 minutes from Nerja, the whitewashed hill village of Frigiliana is regularly voted Spain's most beautiful — winding lanes, Moorish history and spectacular mountain views.
Just a few kilometres north of Nerja, clinging to the slopes of the Sierra de Almijara, lies Frigiliana — one of the most beautiful villages in all of Andalusia and an almost obligatory day trip for anyone staying on this stretch of coast.
What to See
- The Moorish Quarter (Barribarto): A labyrinth of steep, narrow lanes paved in pebble mosaics, draped in bougainvillea and lined with whitewashed houses. Ceramic plaques on the walls tell the story of the Moors' last stand in 1569.
- El Ingenio: Europe's last remaining sugar-cane molasses factory, still producing miel de caña — a local delicacy you can buy at village shops.
- Viewpoints: Several miradores offer sweeping panoramas over the coast and the mountains behind.
Eating & Drinking
Frigiliana has an excellent choice of restaurants for its size, ranging from traditional tapas bars to creative Mediterranean kitchens. Try the local wines and the famous chivo al horno (roast kid).

History
- Almost 4,000 Moriscos (Arabs who had been baptised as Christians) unsuccessfully defended the castle against the Spaniards. It is said that some of the Moors threw themselves down rather than be killed or captured by the Spaniards. Afterwards, the castle was demolished stone by stone, and remains of it can still be seen.
Twelve ceramic plaques located on the walls of the old quarter depict the history of the Moriscos of Frigiliana and the events of the final battle.
