Fiestas of San Antón in Maro

The Fiestas of San Antón fill the streets of Maro every January with the traditional cohetada, the procession of the patron saint, street parties and popular local cuisine.

The Fiestas of San Antón are the main celebration in Maro, the most charming village of Nerja. Every January, this small village of whitewashed streets honours its patron saint with several days of festivities that combine religious tradition, music and food.

The Cohetada and the start of the festivities

It all begins with the cohetada, the launching of fireworks that announces the official start of the festivities. From there, Maro is transformed: the streets are decorated and the neighbours organise activities that involve the whole village.

Procession of San Antón

The central moment is the procession of the saint through the streets of Maro, accompanied by music and the participation of the neighbours. It is traditional to bring domestic animals to receive the blessing of the patron saint, protector of animals.

Street parties and gastronomy

The evenings come alive with popular street parties and stalls where you can sample the local cuisine. Migas, gachas and home-made cured meats are the stars, along with local wine and traditional sweets.
