A Perfect Day in Nerja: The Ultimate Morning to Night Itinerary
Only have one day in Nerja and want to make the most of it? This itinerary takes you from breakfast to an evening stroll through the best spots in town.
You have one day in Nerja and want to make the most of every hour. This itinerary is designed to take you through the must-sees without feeling rushed, combining culture, beach, and great food.
09:00 – Breakfast in the centre
Start the day with an Andalusian breakfast (toast with olive oil, coffee, and fresh orange juice) at one of the cafés in the casco antiguo. The Plaza de España or the Plaza Tutti Frutti are great starting points.
09:45 – Balcón de Europa
Walk to the Balcón de Europa, the most famous viewpoint on the entire Costa del Sol. Early in the morning it's peaceful and the coastal views are spectacular. From here you can head down the stairway to playa de la Caletilla for an epic photo.

10:30 – Cuevas de Nerja
Take the car or bus (10 min) to the Cuevas de Nerja. It is the most visited natural monument in Andalusia and well worth seeing early in the day, when there are fewer crowds. The visit takes around 45 minutes. Buy your tickets online to avoid queues.

If you drive, the cave car park costs €2 a day, paid with two €1 coins.
12:00 – Playa de Maro
From the Cuevas, head down to playa de Maro (5 min by car or 20 on foot). A spectacular cove surrounded by cliffs, with crystal-clear waters perfect for snorkelling. Bring a towel and water: it is a natural beach with no beach bar.

Summer tip: from mid-June to mid-September car access to Maro beach is restricted. A town shuttle runs from Nerja every 20 minutes, 10:00 to 20:30, for €3 return.
14:00 – Lunch at Burriana
Head back to Nerja and make your way to playa de Burriana. Here you'll find the legendary Chiringuito de Ayo, famous for its giant paella cooked outdoors. There are also other restaurants with tables right by the sea.
16:00 – Relax on the beach
After lunch, stay at Burriana and enjoy a lazy beach afternoon. If you prefer something quieter, try Calahonda, just below the Balcón de Europa.
18:30 – Stroll through the old town
Freshen up and take a walk through the streets of the centre. The Iglesia de El Salvador and the narrow lanes draped in bougainvillea are worth a leisurely wander. It's the perfect time to pick up souvenirs or try a handmade ice cream.
20:30 – Dinner
For dinner, there's something for every taste: creative cuisine at Casa Luque, Italian pizza at Il Laboratorio della Pizza, or fresh fish at any of the terraces along the paseo de los Carabineros.
22:00 – Evening drinks at the Balcón
End the day with a drink at one of the terraces surrounding the Balcón de Europa. At night, the illuminated viewpoint has a special magic all of its own. In summer, you may even catch a live concert or open-air show.
Practical tips
- Parking: in summer, leave the car in a public car park and get around on foot: the centre is small. The underground car park at Plaza de España, next to the Balcón, costs about €2.10 an hour (max. €21.90 a day), and there are free spaces on Calle Almirante Carranza. All the options are in our guide to parking in Nerja.
- Local bus: it costs €1 per trip, paid in cash to the driver.
- Sun cream: essential all year round. The Axarquía sun is strong.
- Comfortable footwear: there are hills and steps. Flip-flops won't cut it for a full day out.
- Cash: some smaller beach bars do not accept card payments.
If you have more days
One day covers the essentials, but Nerja has much more. If you are staying longer, browse our guide to things to do in Nerja and add some of these plans:
- The Río Chillar route, walking along the riverbed itself (the season starts in May).
- Frigiliana, the neighbouring white village 6 km away: the bus costs €1.30 and takes about 20 minutes.
- The Maro cliffs, by kayak or on a boat trip.
And if you are still choosing dates, check the weather in Nerja.
